The Story Behind the Nolan Keane Baseball Classic
2014 marked the 1st Annual Nolan Keane Baseball Classic, featuring 9 teams competing on two diamonds at Northeast Park. Since then, the tournament has grown to host over 70 teams across 8 different divisions, now spanning 11 diamonds in Kewanee, Annawan, and Neponset, Illinois — including Northeast Park and Windmont Park in Kewanee, Neponset Field in Neponset, and Howes Park in Annawan.
The tournament was created by Nick Welgat, who recognized an opportunity to honor Nolan Keane while combining two of his own greatest passions: baseball and philanthropy. Over time, the event has grown in both scale and impact, becoming a cornerstone of the regional baseball community.
Nolan S. Keane was born and raised in Kewanee and became an exceptional baseball player. His relentless dedication earned him a place at Missouri State University, where he was a three-year letterman and two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. Nolan posted a career batting average of .323, an OBP of .423, and slugged .501, totaling 19 home runs and 114 RBIs during his collegiate career. He was named team MVP in 2007 and selected to the All-MVC and All-Tournament teams multiple times.
Nolan was on track to pursue a professional baseball career when he was tragically diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma multiforme in 2008. He bravely battled the disease for several years until his passing on April 4, 2013. His legacy lives on through the annual tournament that bears his name and continues to touch hundreds of lives.
Nolan's brother, Patrick Keane, plays a vital role in continuing that legacy. Patrick has been a long-time coach for the Kewanee A’s, Legion teams, and Junior High baseball, and currently serves as head coach for the Annawan-Wethersfield Varsity Titans. He also teaches in the Wethersfield school district and sits on the A’s Board. During the tournament, you’re likely to see Patrick, Nolan’s wife Morgan, their children Kalleigh and Kellan, parents Patrick Sr. and Diane, and many other friends and family members working tirelessly to make the weekend a success.
Giving Back
The largest portion of the money raised each year for the Nolan Keane Memorial Fund comes from tournament entry fees and shirt sales. 100% of proceeds are used to help area children and their families who are battling cancer, experiencing medical issues, or facing other serious hardships. To date, the fund has contributed over $25,000 and continues to grow.
One of the tournament’s key goals is to offer sanctioned USSSA and Legion baseball opportunities without the high price tag. Entry fees are typically $300 less than other comparable tournaments thanks to widespread community support. The Kewanee A’s coaches donate their time to preparing fields and recruiting teams, while the Kewanee and Annawan Park Districts provide field access and maintenance. Countless local volunteers contribute by selling shirts, working stands, and keeping the experience running smoothly.
Without the dedication of this community, none of it would be possible.
